이상좌는 조선왕조시대 16세기에 활동한 궁정 화원이다. 그는 특히 인물화에 능했으며, 현재 그가 그린 것으로 전해지는 나한도 초본 5점이 남아있다. 나한은 아라한의 줄임말로 깨달음의 경지에 도달한 불교 수행자를 의미한다. 본고는 이 그림들에 주목하여, 기존 연구에서 다루지 않았던 부분인 도상 구성과 그 내용, 초본의 제작 목적과 용도, 그리고 이 그림의 가치와 의미를 규명해 보았다. 그 결과 이상좌가 신통력을 지닌 수행자로서의 면모를 다양하게 시각화했음을 알수 있었다. 또한 그림에 쓰여 있는 묵서, 문양, 그리고 화면의 크기 분석을 통해, 이 초본이 실제 제작을 염두에 둔 습작임을 구체적으로 입증했다. 이 그림의 가치와 의미는 크게 두 가지 측면에서 찾을 수 있었다. 하나는 도상의 전통성과 표현기법의 신경향이다. 다시 말해 이 그림은 고려의 나한도상을 적극적으로 수용해 구성한 반면에, 인물의 형상은 조선에 들어와 새롭게 성립된 표현 양식을 따르고 있다. 다른 하나는 조선전기 도석인물화에서 이 그림이 지닌 의미이다. 이 그림은 인물의 자세와 표정이 매우 구체적이며 사실적이다. 조선전기에 그려진 도석인물화는 현존하는 작품의 수량이 매우 적다. 이러한 가운데, 이 그림은, 비록 완성된 그림이 아니라 밑그림이긴 하지만, 이상좌의 기량을 엿볼 수 있고 당시 인물화의 일면을 알 수 있게 해준다는 점에서 결코 가볍게 여길 수 없는 작품이라고 판단된다.

Lee Sang-jwa was a court painter who was active in the 16th century during the Joseon Dynasty. He was particularly good at drawing figures, and there are now five underdrawings of Arhat paintings attributed to him. Arhat means Buddhist monk who has attained enlightenment. This study examined the composition of the icons and their contents, the purpose and use of the sketches, and the values and meanings of these drawings. This is an aspect that has not been specifically explained in previous studies. As a result, it was found that Lee Sang-jwa visualized various aspects of a practitioner with magical powers. Also, by analyzing the records, patterns, and screen sizes written in the drawings, it was confirmed that this paintings were sketches before actual production. The value and meaning of this painting can be found largely in two aspects. One is the tradition of iconography and the new trend of expression techniques. In other words, while these paintings were composed by actively accepting iconography produced in Goryeo, the expression of the figures follows the newly established style in Joseon. The other is the meaning of this work in the Daoist and Buddhist figure paintings in the early Joseon Dynasty. These paintings by Lee Sang-jwa are very specific and realistic in Nahan’s posture and expression. There are few existing works of the Daoist and Buddhist figure paintings produced in the early Joseon Dynasty. Although this painting is a sketch, it gives a glimpse into Lee Sang-jwa’s personality and reveals an aspect of figure painting at the time. In this context, it is judged that these paintings cannot be taken lightly.
