본 연구는 일제강점기 경성에 등장한 간판을 시각문화의 관점에서 조명한 것이다. 첫째, 상업용 간판을 대상으로 경성 상가와 간판의 발달, 간판 디자인과 미의식, 간판에 나타난 근대의 소비문화를 분석했다. 둘째, 철도역, 학교, 기관 등 비상업용 간판의 이미지를 조사해 그곳에 내포된 경성시구 개편, 교육제도 개혁, 주요 기관의 국유화 등 식민지 근대화의 성격을 규명했다. 셋째, 일제 말기 간판의 변화를 추적해 간판에 반영된 전쟁의 영향을 제시했다. 넷째, 간판의 절도, 훼손, 위장 등 간판에 대한 부정적인 반응을 살핌으로써 간판의 물질적 측면 및 이면적 역할도 조명했다. 간판이 즐비한 경성의 거리는 모든 것이 급속히 기호화하는 근대 사회의 모습을 투영한 시각문화의 현장이었다. 간판 속 기호들은 기표와 기의의 끊임없는 미끄러짐에도 불구하고 그것을 잠정적으로 중단하는 ‘고정점’으로서 근대의 주체들에게 작용했다. 그 일시적 환상 속에는 일제의 식민 자본주의, 사회계층의 분화와 차이, 욕망의 발현과 좌절, 폭력과 위장 등 근대화 과정의 많은 요소들이 잠재해 있었다. 식민지의 한계를 내포한 채 경성의 간판은 조선 근대화의 명암을 알리는 기호로서 근대의 시각문화가 구체적으로 발현하는 장소였다.

This study illuminates Japanese colonial period signboards in Gyeongseong from a visual culture perspective. First, for commercial signboards, the development of Gyeongseong commercial and signage, the design and beauty of signboards, and the modern consumer culture shown in the signboards are analyzed. Second, the images of non-business signboards in such as railway stations, schools, and institutions are examined to understand the nature of colonial modernization, including the reorganization of Gyeongseong city district, the reform of the education system, and the nationalization of major institutions. Third, the changes of the signboards at the end of the Japanese colonial period are tracked to present the impact of the war reflected in the signboards. Fourth, by making use of the negative reactions to the signboard, such as theft, damage and camouflage, the material aspects and back side roles of the signboards are also illuminated. The streets in Gyeongseong, lined with signboards, were the scene of a visual culture that projected the appearance of modern society, where everything rapidly became semiotic. Despite the constant slippage between the signifiant and the signifie, the signs(signboards) affected on modern individual subjects as “points de caption” to provisionally stop slipping. In that temporary illusion, many elements of the modernization process were potential, including Japanese colonial capitalism, division and differences between social classes, revelation and frustration of desire, violence and camouflage etc. With the limitations of the colony, the signboards in Gyeongseong were signs of light and darkness of modernization in Korea and were places where modern visual culture was specifically expressed.
