조선후기 入絲 공예품에서 가장 많이 등장하는 기종 중 하나는 煙草文化와 관련된 기물들이다. 연초문화는 담배를 피우는 흡연의 행위와 흡연을 할 때 사용한 도구, 흡연을 즐겨했던 이들이 흡연 또는 담배를 주제로 짓거나 즐긴 시, 회화, 문학작품 등을 담배와 흡연을 둘러싼 제반 행위와 활동, 향유문화를 모두 포괄한다. 17세기 담배의 조선 유입과 연초문화의 확산은 담배합, 담뱃대, 재떨이 등 기존에 없었던 다양한 물질과 문화의 향유를 가져왔다. 본 논문에서 분석한 철제입사담배합 역시 그 중 하나였다. 생활공간을 비롯한 다양한 공간에서 향유된 연초문화는 관련 도구들 역시 사용하기 편리하면서도 휴대성을 갖춰야 하는 실용성이 필수였다. 이러한 소비 배경은 담배잎을 보관하는 담배합 역시 생활 필수 기물로 정착하게 하는 요인이 되었다. 아울러 담배합에는 사용하는 이들의 계층, 목적, 취향에 따라 다양한 장식이 적용되었다. 철제입사담배합은 조선 후기 성행한 공예의 장식기법인 입사(入絲)의 쪼음입사로 장식된 기물이다. 내구성과 휴대성, 실용성을 겸비한 구조와 형태에 당시 유행했던 다양한 문양이 반영되어 조선 후기 사회 전반에 걸쳐 성행했으며, 현재도 많은 수의 유물이 전해지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 당시 철제입사담배합의 소비 배경이 되었던 연초문화와 수요자, 재료의 사용 배경 등을 중심으로 해 철제입사담배합의 분석을 진행했다. 이를 통해 다양한 요인이 작용해 전개된 철제입사담배합의 성행 배경을 확인할 수 있었다.

One of the most recognized pieces of metal inlaid crafts of the Joseon Dynasty is those related to tobacco culture. Tobacco culture includes all the activities and activities surrounding tobacco and smoking, including the acts of smoking, the tools used to smoke, the works of smokers or literary works and arts on the subject of tobacco, and related cultures. The tobacco culture spread in the 17th century as the influx of ships to Joseon brought to the enjoyment of the unprecedented objects and cultures such as cigarette cases, cigarettes and ashtrays. One of them was the cigarette inlay made of iron analyzed in this paper. In accordance with the popularity of tobacco culture, tobacco cases for storing tobacco leaves have become one of the necessities of life. Since the tobacco culture was enjoyed in various spaces including living spaces, the tools used had to be practical. In addition, various decorations were used depending on the class, taste, and purpose of the people using the tools. The iron inlay cigarette case is decorated with JJoeumipsa(쪼음입사) of metal inlay, which is a decorative technique of the late Joseon dynasty. The cigarette case has a variety of patterns that were popular at the time in its structure and form that combines durability, portability and practicality. It was popular throughout the late Joseon society. This paper analyzes iron inlay cigarette case focused on tobacco culture, consumers, and the use of materials. Through this, it was possible to confirm the fashionable background of the iron inlay cigarette case in which various factors worked.
