본고의 연구 대상인 불화(佛畵)는 스위스 상트 갈렌 역사미술박물관(History and Ethnology Museum, St. Gallen, Switzerland)에서 2017년 9월 2일부터 2018년 6월 10일까지 약 9개월 간 개최되었던 <스위스 컬렉션 한국미술 특별전(Poesie der Farben Koreanische Kunst aus Schweizer Sammlungen)>에 출품되었던 작품이다. 스위스 소재 한국 불화에 대한 정보가 그간 전무했었고 근대기 불화를 주로 연구하고 있었던 본 연구자로서는 새롭게 알려진 이 불화가 반갑고 고마웠다. 다행히 화기(畵記: 불화의 제작 관련 기록)가 잘 남아있어 기본 정보를 확인할 수 있었고, 전시가 끝난 이후 추가 정보들을 수집하면서 작품과 제작배경에 대한 흥미로운 점들이 발견되었다. 이 불화는 파주 보광사의 소속 암자인 수구암의 불상 뒤에 봉안되었던 후불도로, 1891년 화승(畵僧) 벽산 용하가 주도하여 태일과 함께 그렸다. 조사결과 이 작품은 같은 해 보광사에서 열린 만일회(萬日會) 때 보광사 대웅보전의 <신중도(神衆圖)>, 대방(大房, 현재 만세루)의 <아미타설법도>와 함께 일시에 조성되었으며, 상궁 천씨(千氏)가 후원하였을 것으로 추정된다. 보광사는 왕실과 상궁들의 후원이 잇따랐고, 이 작품 역시 그 중 하나로 생각된다. 또한 벽산 용하는 기존의 연구에서는 주요하게 다뤄진 적이 없었으나, 본 연구를 통해 근대기 유명 화승이었던 금강산 화승 고산 축연과의 화연 관계를 작품과 기록들을 통해 확인하였고, 강원도와 금강산 지역 불화승에 대해 의미 있는 정보를 추가할 수 있었다.

The Buddhist painting discussed in this article was submitted for the exhibition Poesie der Farben Koreanische Kunst aus Schweizer Sammlungen held at the History and Ethnology Museum of St. Gallen, in Switzerland, for about nine months, from September 2, 2017, through June 10, 2018. Thankfully, it was possible to find some basic information about the painting because records of Buddhist painting(畵記) still remain intact and available. While gathering additional information after the exhibition was finished, I discovered several interesting facts about the artwork and the history of its production. This Buddhist painting is a Hubuldo(後佛圖; Painting behind the Buddha Statue) that had been enshrined behind the Buddha statue of Suguam, a small temple that belongs to Bogwangsa(普光寺) in Paju. It was painted in 1891 mainly by Buddhist monk painter Byeoksan Yongha(碧山榕夏), who worked with Taeil(泰一). Further research revealed that this artwork was created alongside Sinjungdo(神衆圖) at Daeungbojeon( 大雄寶殿), Bogwangsa, and Amitaseolbeoldo(阿彌陀說法圖) at Daebang(大 房, currently Manseru) during the Manilhoe(萬日會) held at Bogwangsa in the same year, supposedly with the sponsorship of Sanggung(a court lady) Cheon.
