고려 초기(918~ 약 1050)의 회화는 왕과 공신의 ?像을 중심으로 초상화와 이를 보관하는 시설의 제도가 수립되고, 궁중의 장식그림과 병풍 제도의 정착으로 새로운 단계로 발전하였다. 이와 더불어 일반회화에서의 새로운 창작활동 및 ?題의 대두와 불교회화의 새로운 전개에 의해 삼국시대에서 통일신라시대를 통해 전개된 고대 회화와는 확연히 구별되는 다양하게 발전된 양상을 이번 연구로 규명하였다. 특히 고려 특유의 채색과 제재로 제작된 畵摺扇(화접선)을 비롯해 靑綠風 산수화와 개경의 八眞仙을 그린 것으로 추정되는 八老圖와 불화의 行道天王圖 등은 중국에서도 호평을 받았다. 회화의 황금기를 이룬 북송에서 최고의 비평가에 의해 기교의 정묘함이 다른 나라와 비교할 수 없을 정도로 회화에 뛰어났다는 평을 들으며 수장과 완상의 대상이 되었던 것이다. 현존하는 2점의 變相圖를 통해서도 당시 고려 회화의 놀랍도록 섬려하고 정교한 기량과 國風化의 양상을 엿볼 수 있다. 고려 초기 회화의 이러한 도약과 성취가 한국회화사의 중세적 전환을 견인하고, 중국과 버금가는 문명의식과 함께 전개되는 고려 회화의 기반적 역할을 하게 된다는 점에서 큰 의의를 지닌다.

In the early period of Goryeo(918~1050), a system of facilities for the storage of portraits that centered on the image of kings and princes was established, and the paintings in the early period of Goryeo advanced to a new stage by the settlement of a system for decorative paintings of palaces and screen paintings. This study identifies various aspects of the development that are distinct from ancient paintings during the Unified Silla period in the time of the Three Kingdoms of Korea by new creative activities, the rise of new topics in general paintings, and the new development of Buddhist paintings. In particular, the following were well received in China: Handheld fans with flower paintings made with Goryeo’s unique colors and materials, the bluegreen landscape paintings and scenery, paintings of the Eight Elders(八老圖) which is supposed to have painted Kekyong’s eight noble castles(八眞仙) and Buddhist paintings of the Heavenly Kings(行道天王圖) as well. In the Northern Song period of the Golden Age of Painting, renowned critics said that sophistication and elaboration in painting had been outstanding and unmatched by other countries and had become the subject of masters and art collection. Through existing two-piece landscape paintings, the astonishingly delicate and intricate features of contemporary Goryeo paintings, as well as the features of the national landscape, can be observed. The accomplishments and progress made in the early Goryeo period transformed the history of Korean painting; this progress is of considerable significance owing to the foundational role it played for Goryeo painting, which was developed alongside the consciousness of Chinese civilization.
