‘대일교역용 회화’란 18세기 후반에서 19세기 전반에 걸쳐 일본 국내에서 발생한 조선화 수요에 대응해 조선 국내에서 제작된 작품군을 포괄하는 개념이다. 최근 대마도 및 동래 왜관 관련의 신 자료가 보고돼, 18·19세기의 한일 회화교류의 다양한 형태와 방식들이 보다 명확히 드러나고 있다. 이 글에서는 대마도(쓰시마) 종가문서(宗家文書[소케몬조]) 수록의 『오토리요세모노(御取寄物)』를 비롯한 신 자료 3점과 신출(新出) 작품 2점을 소개·분석함으로서, 조선 후기 대일교역용 회화에 대한 기존 논의를 보완하고자 한다. 기록류의 신 자료 3건을 통해, 통신사를 매개로 한 직접적인 한일 회화교류가 중단·단절된 새로운 국면 속에서, 대마도와 동래 왜관과 관계된 인물들이 보다 적극적으로 활약했음을 알 수 있다. 또 새롭게 알려진 2점의 작품들을 통해 동래 왜관을 배경으로 19세기 중반 이후까지 중앙과 동래 화단의 화가들이 일본인의 조선화 요청에 다양한 방식으로 대응해 나갔음을 확인할 수 있다. 이는 문헌 기록을 뒷받침하는 실제의 예로서 주목된다. 아직 동래 왜관 수출화를 포함한 조선 후기 대일교역용 회화의 제작과 유통의 실상(實相)은 명쾌하게 밝혀지지 않았다. 하지만 이 글에서 논한 여러 사항들은 18세기 후반 이후의 한일 회화교류를 한 층 깊이 이해하는데 중요한 단서가 될 것으로 여겨진다. 이 글에서 소개·분석한 신 자료와 신출 작품은 18·19세기의 한일 회화교류가 기존에 논의된 것보다 훨씬 넓은 범위에 걸쳐 다각적으로 전개됐음을 보여주는 근거로서 큰 의미를 가진다.

The paintings for trade with Japan (對日交易用 繪畵) is a concept that encompasses a group of works produced in Korea from the late 18th to early 19th centuries in response to increasing demand for Joseon paintings in Japan. New materials related to the Tsushima domain and Dongnae Waegwan have recently been discovered, illuminating the various artistic exchange processes that occurred between Korea and Japan in the 18th and 19th centuries. The purpose of this study is to supplement existing insight into the paintings for trade with Japan in the late Joseon period by introducing and analyzing three new records that including Otoriyosemono (『御取寄物』) contained in Documents of the Tsushima So family (宗家文書), and two newly introduced art works. Three new records show us that the figures involved in Tsushima domain and Dongnae Waegwan played more active roles in a new phase that the direct exchange of paintings between Korea and Japan by Tongsinsa was interrupted or severed. Additionally, two newly introduced works confirm that painters of Seoul and Dongnae had responded in various ways to Japanese requests for Joseon paintings through Dongnae Waegwan until following the mid-19th century. These are noted as a practical example of supporting record materials. The actual production and distribution of the paintings for Trade with Japan in the late Joseon period, including the export paintings of Dongnae Waegwan, has yet to be thoroughly clarified. However, the new records and works that are introduced and analyzed in this study can serve as evidence for understanding the exchange of paintings between Korea and Japan in the 18th and 19th centuries as being highly diverse. The results of this study show that the diversity of these paintings may be far higher than previously argued.
