조선시대에는 결혼을 ‘삼강지본(三綱之本)’이며 ‘인륜지대사’와 ‘인륜지수(人倫之首)’인 ‘대례(大禮)’라 하여 매우 중요한 의례로 꼽았다. 『예기』에도 혼례의 중요성을 “만세의 시작”이요 “예의 근본”으로 강조했었다. 두 가문 남녀의 결합으로 가정을 꾸며 위로 조상을 받들고 아래로 후손을 잇게 함으로서 사회구성의 존속과 확충의 근간을 이룬다고 인식했기 때문이다. 따라서 혼례는 조선시대 사람들의 삶과 그 사회와 문화의 아이덴티티와 전통성을 파악하는 중요한 과제 중의 하나이다. 이러한 조선의 혼례를 파악하고 이해하는 데 있어 문헌기록은 물론 시각자료 또한 각별하다. 기록과 이미지가 더불어 역사적 사실과 지식을 만들기 때문이다. 현재 전하는 혼례 관련 시각 자료는 매우 영세한 실정이지만, 조선 말기 평생도에 혼례장면이 그려져 있고 또 혼인 60갑자를 기념하는 회혼례도 재현되어 있어 그 이미지를 통해 의례 양상과 함께 양식 변화를 살펴볼 수 있다. 평생도병풍은 조선시대에만 제작된 것이다. 경화세족(京華世族)들의 명문 선양의식과 결부되어 선원 김상용의 후손들에 의해 조성된 정선의 ‘선원행사도’에서 비롯되어 모당 홍이상 집안의 가문의식 발로로 김홍도에 의해 수립되었으며, 조선 말기를 통해 사대부 행사풍속화로 이상화되고 유형화되어 근대기까지 민화나 민속화로 확산되었다. 현재 김홍도 작품으로 알려졌거나 주장되어 온 대표적인 《모당평생도》와 《담와평생도》 유현재 구장본 《평생도》의 혼인식과 이를 “대략적으로 재현한” 회혼식의 시각 이미지는, 『주자가례』보다 조선풍의 속례(俗禮)와 시속(時俗)을 더 많이 반영한 특징을 지닌다. 그리고 회혼례도의 양식 비교를 통해 지금도 김홍도의 1781년 작으로 인용되고 있는 《모당평생도》는 헌종 연간(1835~1850년)의 후반에 그려진 것으로 파악된다. 당시 화원화가 백은배나 이한철이 그렸을 가능성을 짐작해 볼 수 있다. 《담와평생도》의 회혼례도는 순조 연간(1801~1834년) 후반의, 유현재 구장본 회혼례도는 순조 연간 전반의 양식적 특징을 보여준다.

Weddings were regarded as highly important rituals in Joseon dynasty Korea. They were considered a ‘foundation for the Three Moral Principles(三綱之本),’ as well as one of the ‘Great Rituals(大禮),’ and were referred to as ‘major life events’ and the ‘pinnacle of human relations(人倫之首).’ The Record of Rituals describes marriage as ‘the beginning of a person’s life’ and the ‘foundation of rituals.’ This is because the union of a man and woman from different families leads to the formation of a new family, one who worships ancestors of the past and leaves descendants for the future-a practice that forms the basis of the survival and expansion of a society. Consequently, an understanding of the wedding ceremony is considered one of the key factors in understanding not just the practices of daily life but also the construction of identity and tradition in the Joseon dynasty. Literary descriptions and visual representations from the period are both essential to the process of understanding wedding ceremonies in the Joseon dynasty. Though few visual representations of wedding ceremonies remain extant, Pyeongsaendo(paintings of a person’s life) produced during the latter part of the Joseon dynasty do reproduce scenes of wedding ceremonies and sixtieth wedding anniversary feasts, which demonstrate both the modes of the ritual and changes to those modes. Interestingly, the Modang Pyeongsaendo, which has been dated to the year 1781 through the comparison of painting modes in the sixtieth wedding anniversary feasts, might in fact date from the reign of King Heonjong(1835~1850) and have been painted by Baek Eunbae or Yi Hancheol, both of whom were official court painters. The Damwa Pyeongsaendo, which depicts a sixtieth wedding anniversary feast, exhibits characteristics of painting modes that were prominent in the latter part of the reign of King Sunjo(1801~1834), while the Pyeongsaendo from the former Yu Hyeonjae library collection exhibits characteristics from the former part of his reign.
