개화기에 근대 일본을 통해 유입된 ‘풍경화’는 1914년 무렵부터 최초의 서양화가 고희동을 선구로 태동되어 김관호와 김찬영에 이어 나혜석에 의해 본격적으로 전개되기 시작했다. 대부분 근대적인 사생적 리얼리즘에 토대를 두고, 관학풍의 인상파와 후기인상파의 온건한 모더니즘으로, 무명의 실경과 전원풍경을 비롯해 ‘제국의 경관’으로 편입된 명승과 지방색 또는 향토색의 농촌풍경 등을 다루었다. 김찬영은 낭만주의적 구상풍경을 삽화로 그렸는가 하면, 나혜석은 만주에 거주하며 이국취향의 고적풍경과 오리엔탈리즘적 시선으로 중국인 거리를 재현하기도 했다. 특히 나혜석은 경관의 광선 현상과 사회 현상을 모티프로, 독특한 구도의 창출과 함께 견고한 필촉의 마티에르로 경물의 근골과 화면의 골조를 조직화하며 초기 풍경화를 본격적으로 견인한 의의를 지닌다.

The concept of 'Landscape painting' made its way to Korea from Japan during the Enlightenment period. Ko Hui-dong, the first Western-style painter in Korea, pioneered this genre around 1914, and it was further developed by artists like Kim Kwan-ho, Kim Chan-young, and Na Hye-sok. While embracing the moderate modernism of academic-styled Impressionism and post-Impressionism, and grounded in modern, nature-derived realism, the works of these artists often depicted subjects like nameless scenery, rural landscapes, the 'scenic spots of the Empire,' and local color-oriented countryside scenes. Kim Chan-young specialized in illustrating romantic figurative landscapes, while Na Hye-sok, residing in Manchuria, portrayed exotic-style historical landscapes and Chinese streets from an Orientalistic perspective. Especially, Na Hye-sok imbued her work with the ray effect of landscapes and social scenes. With the creation of unique compositions and the matiere built by the use of robust brushstroke technique, she organized the underlying structure of landscapes and the framework of the canvas. This gave her early landscape paintings a distinct significance, as she authentically propelled the genre forward.
